Needles Start back, front and sleeves with larger needles; change to smaller needles for yoke, first using the 40" long circular
needle, then switching to the 24" circular needle when necessary.
Second column
Smock pat Work in rnds according to Chart B. Work sts as seen on on chart. Starting at double arrow, work to arrow a, then rep sts from right to
left bet a to b; end by working sts right to left bet arrow c and double arrow. For yoke, follow instructions, starting with 5th row shown on chart B.
Open areas on chart represent the dec’d sts; just skip across them and cont the rnd.
Third column, fourth line, following smocking st symbol:
1 smocking stitch = With yarn in position to knit, skip next 6 sts on needle, insert needle from front to back between 6th
skipped st and next st, yo and pull up a lp, place lp on left needle and k tog with first skipped st, k1, p2, k2.
Third column:

22 sts and 29 rows in St st = 4"/10cm with size 8 needles.

Note The decs on yoke are made at beg and end of each of back, left sleeve, front and right sleeve sections—8 decs on
each of 9 rnds—72 sts dec after one rep of rows as specified below; 144 sts dec after two reps of rows as specified below.
With RS facing, place sts from back, left sleeve, front, and right sleeve onto 40“/100cm circular needle–336 (368, 400) sts
and pm bet back, left sleeve, front and right sleeve sections to make it easier to position the decs. Follow chart B. Work in
rnds and cont in smock pat working rows 5 through 55 (5 through 73, 5 through 81); then rep once more but start from row
8, until 192 sts rem. For neck edging, cont in St st for 4 rows, p next row for turning ridge, cont in St st for 4 rows. Bind off. |

SLEEVES
Cast on 70 (72, 74, 77, 79) sts. Starting with a WS row, work ¾"/2cm—7 rows— in garter st. Work decs that foll in this manner:
Selvage st, k2 tog, work to last 3 sts, SKP, selvage st. Work in St st, dec 1 st at beg and end of every 4th row 10 times;
then every 6th row twice—46 (48, 50, 53, 55) sts. Work even until piece measures 9½ (9½, 10, 10¼, 10¾)"/24 (24, 25, 26,
26)cm after garter st. Inc 1 st at beg and end of next row; then every 4th row 6 times; then every 6th row 3 times—66 (68,
70, 73, 75) sts. Work even until piece measures 7½“/19cm–46 rows after first inc. Shape cap Bind off 3 sts at beg of next 2
rows; then 2 sts at beg of foll 6 rows; dec 1 st at beg of foll 16 rows; bind off 2 sts at beg of foll 2 rows; then 3 sts at beg of
foll 2 rows–24 (24, 26, 28, 28) sts. Bind off. |
